THE TAKEAWAY
A useful performance report connects the action an ad produces with the value your business can actually deliver.
Choose the outcome before the channel
Performance marketing starts with a business action you can measure and improve. For an online shop, that may be a completed purchase. For a service business, it may be a qualified enquiry that becomes an appointment or a signed project. A click creates an opportunity; your offer, website and sales process decide what happens next.
Write down the qualification rules before launch. Include the service requested, location, suitability and the next step your team will take. Then agree who owns that follow-up. A campaign cannot compensate indefinitely for enquiries that sit unanswered or reach the wrong person.
Make the conversion signal useful
Google Ads supports measurement of actions across websites, apps and phone calls. The important implementation decision is which completed actions represent your objective. A visitor opening a form and a visitor submitting it should not become indistinguishable in your reporting.
Test the whole journey yourself. Complete the form, check the confirmation, confirm that the enquiry arrives and inspect the recorded event. Document any measurement gaps. When possible, reconcile campaign leads with accepted opportunities in your sales records, using an agreed process for handling customer data.
Read the numbers together
Cost per lead is advertising spend divided by the leads counted. Cost per qualified lead uses only enquiries that meet your agreed criteria. Customer acquisition cost needs a clearly defined cost scope and the customers acquired. Label each measure so a cheaper initial enquiry is not mistaken for a cheaper customer.
ROAS divides attributed revenue by ad spend. It is a revenue ratio, not profit: margins, fulfilment costs, refunds and agency fees still matter to the business. State the reporting dates, attribution source and conversion window beside the report. Do not add together platform-attributed revenue as though every platform counted a different customer.
Turn the report into one next decision
Review the journey in order. If relevant people do not click, examine the message and audience. If clicks arrive but enquiries do not, inspect the landing page and offer. If enquiries fail qualification, review intent, creative promises and the questions asked. If qualified enquiries do not close, investigate the follow-up and sales conversation.
Choose one test with a clear question, an owner and a review point. Keep a record of what changed so the next report can explain the result. Scale when the evidence, delivery capacity and business economics support it. A strong account is built through decisions that can be explained and repeated.
